The room with a view
When we first bought the farmhouse, this room was the master bedroom. It was my favorite room in the house because it had the prettiest view of the oak trees in the backyard. When we moved into the farmhouse I wanted this to be a formal sitting room. I imagined this would be the room where me and my girl friends would play cards and sip tea. Right. Nice thought but that never happens.
One of the things I really try and encourage people to do in their homes is to make good use of every space they have. I don't like rooms that collect dust but are picture perfect. Why you ask? Because home is to be a place where you actually live life.
Every time I would walk by this room I would cringe a little bit (maybe because I knew I wasn't practicing what I preached). I realized this room with the best view in the house had turned into the off limits space for everyone but my imaginary friends and I who sip tea and throw some cards around. One thing I never established when we moved in was a space for me to work- my stuff was everywhere and I was never motivated to get my work done because I didn't have a specific space for office work. So last week I decided to take the large arm chairs out and put my desk in the sitting room.
Now this couch serves as a real place where my four kiddos can sit and read books or play while I do some work at my desk.
I actually enjoy getting some work done now at home because I have established a place for it.
As I get older I truly believe that less is more and I don't want to over crowd my rooms. The simplicity of this room helps my mind focus on what I need to focus on to get work done.
We have been in this room a lot this week and it feels good to know it is being used for a purpose.
There is so much satisfaction that comes with creating practical and pretty spaces for you and your family. The formal sitting room was nice while it lasted, but it was time to make good use of the space so we could sit and finally enjoy the view.
